Bali inspired gems

The Rainbow Collection at Ala Moana Center is a "Meet the Artist" event from 5 to 9 p.m. today, featuring designer Carolyn Tyler, whose jewelry will be on display through Saturday.

Tyler was once the owner of a successful California advertising agency. Burnt out after a decade of 18-hour days and divorced, she began traveling and fell in love with Bali, where she's found a second career designing gold and stone jewelry in Ubud.

Her home is also a Bali retreat for many visiting celebrities, who are also some of her best jewelry clients, among them Mick Jagger, Jerry Hall, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn.

Tyler is attracted to irregular stones, explaining to Lapidary Journal that "I've never been attracted to precision-cut, so-called 'flawless stones' -- they're too sterile, no soul. Tribal people throughout the world choose stones with 'flaws' to do their magic -- they say that's where their magic lives. Funny, gems are like people: character, or spirit is gained through imperfection, not perfection!"

Tyler will be featuring awesome 22K one-of-a-kind creations from her "Stones of Fire" collection, as well as some of her new silver line of jewelry. Prices range from $300 to $6,000.
