Shimabukuro’s second
solo CD due Aug. 26

LESS THAN a year after releasing his Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning release, "Sunday Morning," ukulele pro Jake Shimabukuro is getting set to drop his next album on fans. "Crosscurrent," set for release here on Aug. 26, incorporates Latin and ska influences with a mix of jazz, blues and rock 'n' roll.

"The songs take a more aggressive, rock-style approach, but are still fun to listen to," said Shimabukuro of his second solo release. "Crosscurrent" went on sale yesterday in Japan, and a seven-city concert tour is planned there later this month ...

IF YOU plan it right, it's possible to see fireworks three nights in a row this Fourth of July. I'm planning on getting my long weekend started tonight aboard the Ali'i Kai catamaran for Star 101.9's "Red, White and Boom Cruise."

Tickets are $15 for the cruise, which boards at 8 p.m. tonight. Johnny Helm and Speedlimit will be there to get the crowd warmed up before the fireworks start flying over Aloha Tower Marketplace around 8:30 p.m. Call 296-1019 for more info ...

ON THE holiday itself, the biggest bangs will be over Magic Island starting at 8:30 p.m. At Ala Moana Center, Fiji, Robi Kahakalau and Sean Na'auao will perform during a pre-fireworks show hosted by KCCN FM-100's Billy V., Lina Girl and Pipi that starts at 6 p.m. ...

AND ON Saturday, check out Sunset on the Beach in Waikiki for yet another fireworks display at 7:30 p.m. "Lilo & Stitch" is this week's movie, and there's always a ton of food to try and vendor booths to check out as well ...

DON'T CARE about fireworks? Make the trek out to Sea Life Park and catch "Dub Session," starting at 6 p.m. tonight.

Go Jimmy Go, Ooklah the Moc, Quadraphonix and White Lines will perform, and Island Rhythm 98.5's Jake and MC Jamal are set to host the fun. DJ Sovergn T will also be on hand, joining Stone Groove Family's DJ Jrama and Sub Zero to go buck wild on the turntables. Tickets are $15 for this one ...

REGGAE FANS also have a reason to celebrate this weekend -- the guys from Empire Sound have made it through a year of Saturday nights at Grumpy's and are planning an outdoor concert starting at 6 p.m. Los Angeles band Lion Heart will perform, and local groups Red Degree and T.H.C. will also skank their way on stage.

Ten bucks gets you into this 21-and-over event, and if you go, be sure to congratulate DJs Loriel, Lukas and Gary Famous for the past 12 months of success with their labor of love ...
