Kaiser offers kits
with hurricane supplies

Kaiser Permanente has created three-day hurricane emergency kits available for one-, two- and four-person families.

The kits have food and water, emergency blankets, 12-hour light sticks, flashlights, a comprehensive first aid kit and hygiene supplies. The kits include 12 meals and 12 packs of water per person. The food and water have a five-year shelf life.

Also included is a hurricane checklist to add personal items to the "grab and go" kit, as well as safety tips for the home.

Jeanette LaRock, over-the-counter pharmaceutical coordinator for Kaiser Permanente's Hawaii Region, said the kits are compact, well organized and convenient.

"The food bars are less bulky than canned goods, and the drinking water comes in lightweight packets rather than plastic bottles," she said.

The first aid items were selected by Kaiser's medical professionals.

Each kit is in a durable, water-resistant backpack or duffel bag that can also hold clothes, medicine and other necessities.

Prices vary from $26.95 for a one-person kit in a Kaiser cooler to $129.95 for the four-person kit in a duffel bag.

Kits are available at Kaiser Permanente pharmacies on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island and the Moanalua Medical Center gift shop.

The hurricane season began this month and continues through November. Kaiser advises following these Civil Defense instructions during a hurricane warning:

>> Remain indoors away from windows.

>> Stay in the most central room on the ground floor.

>> Evacuate the coastal areas when instructed by officials or when threatened by high surf.

>> Unplug unnecessary electric appliances.
