Star-Bulletin travel writer
wins regional writing award

Cheryl Chee Tsutsumi is among the winners of the Society of the American Travel Writers Western Chapter's 2003 writing competition.

She received the silver award for her "Hawaii's Back Yard" column that appears every Sunday in the Star-Bulletin's Travel section. She received the bronze award in the same division last year.

SATW's Western Chapter encompasses Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming and Mexico. So "Hawaii's Back Yard" competed with magazine and newspaper columns published in these regions.

The columns that ran last year, comprising the winning entry were:

"This ride takes you somewhere over the rainbows," about hot air ballooning on the Big Isle, published March 24; "Experience freedom of paniolos," about Paniolo Adventures on the Big Isle, Dec. 8; and "Bowfin museum a reminder of sacrifice that helped secure victory in WWII," about the submarine museum on Oahu, Dec. 15.

Other winners in the travel column division this year were Nancy Muenker of the Denver Post, gold; and Judith Morgan of the San Diego Union-Tribune, bronze.

See the Columnists section for
some of Tsutsumi's past articles.
