Inouye to be honored with
other living WWII vets


The Hawaii Foodbank will honor five living World War II Medal of Honor recipients from Hawaii and one from the Vietnam War July 3 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom as part of its annual fund-raising event. The 8th annual "Patriots Celebration" will begin at 6 p.m.

The honorees from World War II are Army Pvt. Barney Hajiro, Pvt. Shizuya Hayashi, 1st. Lt. Daniel Inouye, Tech. Sgt. Yeiki Kobashigawa and Tech. Sgt. Yukio Okutsu. The Vietnam War honoree is Marine Sgt. Maj. Allan Jay Kellog. Hayashi and Kobashigawa were members of the 100th Battalion, Inouye, now a U.S. senator, Hajiro and Okutsu were members of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.

There also will be an exhibit honoring the 24 Japanese American Medal of Honor recipients who fought in World War II in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the 100th Battalion.

Veterans may purchase seats at a special rate of $50, which includes a dinner. Tables of 10 are available for $10,000, $5,000, $2,500, $1,750 and $175 for individual seats. Call Polly Kauahi at the Foodbank at 836-3600 extension 226 for tickets or more information.


Former members, about 200 of them, of an all-Hawaiian Marine company who took their oath on the steps of Iolani Palace 50 years ago are invited to return to the same place on July 10 for a reunion celebration.

A roll call of the company members will be called off at the 3:30 p.m. ceremony along with the playing of "Taps" to honor those who have died. Territorial Gov. Samuel Wilder King presented the "Da Kine" Marines with the Hawaii's territorial colors, which will be returned to Gov. Linda Lingle. >> Lt. Col. Walter E. Piatt has assumed command of 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, relieving Lt. Col. Thomas P. Guthrie.

>> Lt. Col. Patrick M. Rice has assumed command of the 556th Personnel Service Battalion, relieving Lt. Col. David Jones. Also, Command Sgt. Maj. Ray Christian relinquished his responsibility as the battalion's senior noncommissioned officer to Command Sgt. Maj. Nathaniel Sheppard.

>> Lt. Col. Steven K. Brown has assumed command of the 2nd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, Lt. Col. Martin T. Carpenter.

>> Lt. Col. Jeffrey R. Eckstein has assumed command of the 84th Engineer Battalion, relieving Lt. Col. Daniel J. Cummings.

>> Lt. Col. Daley Lynne has assumed command of the 30th Signal Battalion, relieving Lt. Col. Richard Volz, Jr.

>> Lt. Col. Michael D. Lundy has assumed command of the 1st Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, relieving Lt. Col. Arthur T. Ball, Jr.

>> Lt. Col. James Lee has assumed command of the 125th Military Intelligence Battalion, relieving Lt. Col. John Bird.
