Dogs take their humans for a stroll in the Hawaiian Humane Society's Petwalk.

Four-legged fun
for a good cause

Sunday is Petwalk day, when thousands of Honolulu's two- and four-legged walkers come together to meet, greet, sniff and show their support for animals in need.

The annual fund-raiser for the Hawaiian Humane Society will be lead by Gov. Linda Lingle, Mayor Jeremy Harris and Harris' wife, Ramona. It's all about caring.

Animals have been living with people for thousands of years. We consider them special members of our family. Petwalk 2003 gives you the opportunity to make sure animals that need special help will be able to receive it. Since 1897 the Hawaiian Humane Society has been providing care and shelter to thousands of homeless, lost and abused animals every year.

What you can do:

>> Walk and collect pledges from family, friends and others. You don't need to bring a pet to participate.

>> Sponsor a walker with a tax-deductible donation.

>> Learn what to do if you see an abused or neglected animal.

>> Be an advocate for programs and laws that protect animals.

Take doggie to work

Today is "Take Your Dog to Work Day."

The campaign was started by Pet Sitters International to encourage people to adopt dogs from animal shelters and to encourage employers to offer benefits that will help pet owners care for their animals.

Now in its fifth year, Take Your Dog to Work Day gives dogs the chance to socialize, while their owners and co-workers enjoy the companionship of furry friends. Employers can observe the decreased stress levels and increased morale and productivity that pets bring.

The Hawaiian Humane Society has guidelines for taking your dog to work. Download them from www.hawaiianhumane.org (choose News & Events, Calendar of Events and June 20).

If you're unable to take your dog to work today, make Petwalk on Sunday your special outing.

"Pet Ohana" runs the first and third Fridays of the month. The Hawaiian Humane Society is a nonprofit agency dedicated to preventing cruelty to animals. Call 946-2187.
