‘Ihi

Latin name: Portulaca molokiniensis

Description: Short and stocky is the best description for these rare succulents. They have thick leaves that usually cluster toward the top of an even thicker stem. They also have a cluster of bright yellow flowers sitting in a cup of leaves above the plant.

Distribution: These plants are uncommon, restricted to only three populations on Molokini island, Pu'ukoa'e islet and Kahoolawe.

Landscape Use and Care: 'Ihi look great anywhere, even in pots on the lanai. Plant them around larger landscape stones as accents. They like well-drained soil and full sun.

The best way to water these plants if they don't have well-drained soil is to soak the ground and water again only when the soil has dried out. Few pests bother this plant, but if tiny black spots appear on the leaves, spray with any type of plant pesticide. The new leaves should be spot-free.
