It’s back to
‘Center Stage’
for Schull

IT'LL be "Center Stage" again Sunday for Island dancer Amanda Schull. The star of Columbia Pictures' film, "Center Stage," and a dancer with the San Francisco Ballet, Amanda will appear with other members of her dance company at THISIT teen department at Macy's Ala Moana from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Then she's off to Sunset on the Beach to greet the crowd before the showing of you'll never guess what movie -- "Center Stage." Amanda returns to Macy's on Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. She'll be one of the dancers from the San Francisco, Miami City and Boston ballet companies who'll be performing in Ballet Hawaii's "A Midsummer Night's Dream Celebration" on June 27 ...

WHILE I was correct in reporting former Isle developer Chris Hemmeter is battling liver cancer, it's Parkinson's Disease (not Alzheimer's) that also afflicts him. Tim Guard called from Hemmeter's L.A. home and was very upbeat, saying most of his friends there think he can beat the life-threatening cancer. It hasn't slowed him down from a business standpoint. His Saddle Ranch Chop House at the entrance of Universal Studios' tourist attraction is so successful, filling the 1,500 seat eatery regularly, that Universal wants him to operate a second Saddle Ranch at their Orlando location. All of Chris' Isle friends are pulling for him ...

Jazz is brewing

THE Honolulu Jazz Quartet has been busy in the recording studio to ready a CD for July or August release. Those who want a preview can see the HJQ at Brew Moon from 8 to 11 p.m. tomorrow. Special guest is knockout vocalist Napua Davoy, in from New York City. The jazz vocalist is part- Hawaiian but grew up in Texas. She moved on to perform throughout Europe and at Birdland in New York. Leader John Kolivas is hoping saxman Allen Won, in from N.Y., will also sit it. Cover charge is just $5 ...

WHAT polo is to speed, dressage is to lack of speed or standing still. You can see some young women vying for scores to make them eligible to compete in the North American Young Rider Competition in Ontario, Canada at 5 p.m. Saturday. There's also competiion Sunday at Hilltop Equestrian Center in Waimanalo. And a real rarity has Evelyn Wallis doing a Century Ride. That's where rider and horse, in this case Somer's Dream, adds up to over 100. That's all you need to know, says he, gallantly ...

Mark of de-stink-tion

SOMEHOW the makers of Odor-Eaters are missing the boat, it seems to me. They've selected Hawaii as the state with the "Sweetest Smelling Feet," using as a criterion the fact that more Odor-Eaters per capita are purchased here then any where else in the U.S. Sorry, but wouldn't that be an indication Hawaii has anything but sweet smelling feet, hence the artificial enhancers. Still, Frank Haas of the Hawaii Tourism Authority accepted a plaque bestowing the honor. And forget about it being "a treat to beat your feet on the Mississippi Mud." Mississippi came in last ...
