It’s a small
Hawaiian-style
world, after all

HOW about a couple of "small world" items. "Uncle" Jack Sullivan found it remarkable that his daughter in Seattle, Kathleen, just had a baby she named Gigi. Her husband, Brent Gaines is manager of the Seattle Westin, and a co-worker of his brought by a baby gift for him, a book she found at a garage sale. At the time, she had no idea that the book, "The Best Hawaiian Style Mother Goose Ever," was written by Kathleen's brother, Kevin, now married and living in Los Gatos. The Sullivan kids may be spread out, but there always seems to be something to bring them together ...

THEN there was Meadow Gold representative Jon Bryan, stopping by the Perry & Price Hanohano Room show to plug the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Meadow Gold Healthy Baby contest. Host Michael W. Perry asked if they'd located the first baby from 50 years ago and Bryan said they hadn't been able to. Lo and behold, audience member Lei Cunningham offered help. She mention that her cousin, Donald Leong, was the first -- she remembered seeing the photos. Any past winners can participate by calling Meadow Gold ...

Wet and windy Waimea

YOU can tell when you've reached Waimea, I always told longtime Big Isle resident Patti Cook, because it's at the "You are entering Waimea" sign that it started raining. Not so of late. It's been so sunny and warm of late that the Waimea pastures and farmlands are parched. That's why Cook writes, "It's drizzling -- and a mist-laden cloud just peeked its head out of nearby Waipi'o Valley and is enveloping the neighborhood, and we are thrilled!" ...

I'M sure Waimea folks won't even mind if it's raining Sunday when the Paniolo Preservation Society formally dedicates is larger-than-life bronze monument saluting Hawaii's most famous paniolo, Ikua Purdy. He's affectionately referred to as the Duke Kahanamoku of the paniolo world. Nearly 70 Hawaiian ranch brands have been cast in a "lei" of bronzes that will encircle the base of the Fred Fellows monument at Parker Ranch Center ...

Feasts of Fury

I HAD the good fortune of sitting ringside at the greatest boxing match ever, at the "Thrilla in Manila." Those not lucky enough to see that might be interested in taking in the fight 1 p.m. Saturday at the Taste of Honolulu. That'll be UH athletic director Herman Frazier taking on S.F. 49er assistant coach Dick Tomey as part of the "Ready, Set Cook" competition in a "knock 'em down, broke da mout" match. Friday night "Taste" will pit UH swim coach Mike Anderson against golf coach Ronn Miyashiro, a "diver vs. driver" competition. And it's a crimefighter vs. firefighter Friday when HPD Chief Lee Donahue competes head to head with HPD Fire Chief Attilio Leonard, who feels hot ...

AS itemed here Tuesday, Honolulu bounty hunter Dog Chapman said he'd tracked down Max Factor heir Andrew Luster, who was on the lam from the cops, and an arrest should be imminent. Yesterday the Dog caught his man ...
