Sailing canoe series continues Saturday

The Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association continues its competition Saturday with the Aston Kaluakoi Challenge race from Kaluakoi, Molokai, to Kailua, Oahu.

Eight sailing canoes are expected to cross the Ka Iwi Channel in the fifth event of the Aston Series. The race is scheduled to start around 11 a.m. off Molokai with the first finishers expected around 3 p.m. at Kailua Beach.

Defending series champion Marvin Otsuji of Kauai, captain of the Kamakakoa, won the first two races in April. Maui's Mike Spalding, captain of the Makakoa, won last month's two races.

The series continues with Sunday's Ho'olaule'a O Ke Kai, a race from Kailua to Oahu. Canoes are expected to set sail at 10 a.m. off Kailua Beach.

The final two races in the series are the 95-mile Na Holo Kai on July 26 from Haleiwa, Oahu, to Nawiliwili, Kauai, and the Kendall Pacific Challenge Kauai coastal race Sept. 20 from Nawiliwili to Waimea.

The HSCA's goal is to learn, revive, practice and provide education on ancient Hawaiian skills and values as they relate to sailing canoes and the Hawaiian culture.
