Hong, Toyama claim junior golf titles

Lindsay Hong and Travis Toyama won their respective divisions yesterday as the Westfield Junior Aloha Section PGA Championship concluded at The Fazio Course at Turtle Bay Resort.

The victories qualify Toyama and Hong for the 28th national Westfield Junior PGA Championship, July16-19, in Westfield Center, Ohio.

Toyama, 17, posted a final-round 70 -- 139 for an eight-stroke win over Ryan Perez, David Kim and Chris Caycayon. Toyama, however, has opted to play at the Junior World in San Diego during the same week.

Caycayon won a three-way playoff for first alternate position and the all-expense trip to Ohio.

Hong, 17, had finished with a 73 -- 146 for a two-stroke victory over Stephanie Kono and Britney Choy.

The 12-and-under tournament also concluded yesterday at the Naniloa Country Club on the Big Island.

Winning the boys 11-12 division was Taeksoo Kyung with Megan Ueno taking the girls title. The 9-10 division ended in a tie with Alex Chiarella and Christian Agosto sharing the boys title. The girls title went to Kristen Sawada.

Ryan Lloyd and Kian Kurokawa tied for the boys 6-8 title. Alexandra Kaui won the girls division.

NCAA Summer League opens 27th season

Current University of Hawaii players Phil Martin and Michael Kuebler, and incoming Rainbow recruits Julian Sensley and Bobby Nash headline the rosters of the 27th NCAA Summer Basketball League that opens Tuesday at the Manoa Recreation Center.

Also participating will be all-state high school players Derek Low of Iolani and Rashaun Broadus of Mililani.

Teams competing are Honolulu Ford, Electricians Hawaii, Mango Moon, Central Medical Clinic, John Hancock Financial and Grantco Pacific. Play is on Tuesday and Thursday nights, with games at 6 and 7:30 p.m. The playoffs begin Aug. 7 with the championship game at 7 p.m. on Aug. 12.

13 local athletes headed to Special Olympics

Thirteen Special Olympics Hawaii athletes have been selected to participate as part of Team USA in the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Dublin, Ireland, June 21-29.

The athletes will be honored at a send-off dinner tonight from 6:30 to 7:30. at Murphy's Bat & Grill at the corner of Nuuanu & Merchant streets. A short program will follow dinner.
