Haleiwa man charged with filching Navy mail

A federal grand jury has charged a Haleiwa man with stealing incoming and outgoing mail of Navy personnel stationed aboard ships and submarines docked at Pearl Harbor.

Karson Kuewa, 33, allegedly stole mail between November 2001 and February 2002, according to the indictment filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court.

Kuewa is also charged with obstruction of correspondence, a charge that generally involves mail that has been delivered but not received by the recipient.

Both offenses are punishable by a maximum five years' imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.

Filipino center having party to mark first year

The Filipino Community Center in Waipahu will celebrate its first year of existence today.

Cleanup and beautification of the center at 94-428 Mokuola St. will take place at 7:30 a.m. Food and entertainment will follow from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Afterward, the center will feature a town hall meeting with city and state officials.

The award-winning documentary "An Untold Triumph," about the soldiers of the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments of World War II, will be shown at 1:30 p.m.

Filmmakers Stephanie Castillo, Domingo Los Banos and Linda Revilla will also attend the event. Festivities including ballroom dancing, karaoke and refreshments will follow.

Kalihi Valley group sponsoring Ohana Day

The Kalihi Valley Collaborative, a community group, is inviting the public to its Kalihi Ohana Day, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, at Kalihi Valley District Park.

Kalihi Ohana Day also honors the families and diverse cultures of Kalihi Valley.

The event will provide information and activities intended to prevent violence and the abuse of alcohol and drugs.

Local bands and dance groups will provide entertainment at the free event.

Educational activities, children's games and exhibits will be featured.

Mayor Harris to face media on the ball field

Mayor Jeremy Harris and the media will once again square off -- but this time on the softball field.

The 11:30 a.m. game today between members of the media and the mayor's team is part of the activities slated for the opening of the softball fields at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Opening ceremonies for the fields begin at 11 a.m.

In addition to mayor-media game, there will be softball games played by seniors, youths and a pro team from Okinawa.

>> The Theodore A. Vierra Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation has given the American Cancer Society $5,000 for the Persons In Need Program. The money will go toward air fare and car rides for patients who must travel to Oahu for treatment, training volunteers, free cancer screenings and other services for Big Island residents 50 and older.

>> The Atherton Family Foundation has given $7,500 to the East Hawaii Unit of the American Cancer Society for the second year of the Ka'u Community Capacity Project. The project enables Kau residents to access information and programs that reduce risks of chronic disease, expand volunteer programs for early cancer detection and eliminate barriers for cancer patients to get treatment.

>> Saint Louis School seniors Chin Ki Tam and Kenneth Fontes won first place in the Dual Exhibition category at the National Drill Team Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla.

>> Cynthia Fisher, of Punahou School, has been selected as one of 400 outstanding scholars to attend the National Young Leaders Conference in August in Washington, D.C.

Suspect flees after Kaimuki bank heist

Honolulu police are looking for a man who robbed the Kaimuki Branch of American Savings about 2 p.m. yesterday.

Police said the suspect entered the bank and presented a demand note. The suspect took an undisclosed amount of money containing a dye pack. He was last seen running through the parking lot toward Harding Avenue.

CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department want the public's assistance in identifying the man who robbed the Kaimuki Branch of American Savings Bank yesterday.



Police believe the suspect is also responsible for the June 4 robbery of City Bank in Makiki.

The suspect is described as 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-9 Hawaiian-Caucasian male in his early 20s. He has a slim build, is clean-shaven and had a bandage across his nose. He was wearing a white baseball cap, black-insignia light-blue collared shirt, khaki pants and dark shoes.

15 hurt in 8-car crash on the H-1 freeway

Fifteen people were injured in yesterday's eight-car pile-up on the H-1 freeway.

Twelve of them were transported in stable condition to area hospitals. Ten went to St. Francis Medical Center-West, and two went to Kapiolani Medical Center at Pali Momi. Three patients were transported in serious condition. One went to Pali Momi, and two went to the Queen's Medical Center.

One car was completely destroyed after it caught fire, and the car behind it received some fire damage to its front. The chain-reaction collisions happened at 6:39 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the freeway near the Sears Distribution Center.

Police closed the freeway at the Halawa offramp for about an hour and redirected traffic onto Kamehameha Highway. However, traffic backed up for about a quarter of a mile to the Manager's Drive overpass, said Danielle Tucker, KCCN Radio traffic reporter.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Just prior to the pile-up, there was an accident near the Waipahu exit, Tucker said.

Suspect believed living on Waianae beaches

Honolulu police are seeking the public's help to locate Shane Canonio on warrants for probation revocation, domestic violence and contempt.

He has prior convictions for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl, theft and assault.

Canonio is described as a 5 feet 8 inches tall, about 180 pounds, with a muscular build, short brown hair and brown eyes.

Canonio also has a tattoo on his left shoulder of the word "boy" and "Kalani" in Old English on the back of his right arm and several words on his left upper arm.

Canonio is believed to live on the beaches in Waianae.

Sex assault suspect caught at Fort Shafter

A 19-year-old man was charged yesterday for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl.

Emmanuel Etienne was arrested at Fort Shafter and charged with five counts of first-degree sexual assault and three counts of third-degree sexual assault.

The victim reported being repeatedly sexually assaulted on May 31.

Etienne's bail is set at $75,000.

HPD says friendly date turned into sex assault

An 18-year-old man sexually assaulted and kidnapped a 14-year-old female Thursday in Waipahu, police said.

Police said the suspect and victim previously agreed to meet and go out with friends. Later in the evening, he allegedly took the victim to his residence, physically restrained and sexually assaulted her.

2 men arrested in Waikiki theft

Police arrested two men in their 20s yesterday for allegedly robbing and kidnapping a 29-year-old man in Waikiki.

The two suspects approached the victim and demanded money, police said. Both suspects then grabbed the victim by both arms and escorted him into an alley. One suspect threatened the victim with a knife, and the other suspect punched him. They allegedly stole the victim's wallet with $25 and his cell phone.
