Trash becomes
office treasure
in Leary’s eyes

THEY found the remains of an old airplane sitting unmolested in a dump site the other day. Good thing Island Demo owner Mike Leary didn't find it first -- it may have ended up in his office. Island Demo is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, and those who come by his office can plainly see that Leary is a believer in recycling all that is recyclable, often plunking it down in his Mapunapuna office. The "trash turned office decor" ranges from a Highland lizard carcass that survived the First Interstate Bank fire, a samurai sword and Holy Bible retrieved from some trash pile and Leary's personal favorite, a hollow, gothic-looking cross, probably a stage prop, left in one of Island Demo's on-site waste bins the day before Easter Sunday. Happy scavenging, Mike ...

MORTON'S, the Steak House, has a new G.M. with almost the perfect name -- David Martin. He's combining two of his favorite things for Father's Day, steak and golf. No, he's not slipping off to the links, but all dads dining there Sunday will be given a complimentary gift of logo golf balls ...

On Guard

MCCABE, Hamilton & Renny honcho Tim Guard visited Aaron's to celebrate the fact that "Follies," the Diamond Head Theatre musical featuring his wife, Devon Guard, has been extended through Sunday. It was also a belated birthday bash for Tim, and joining the couple was a man always looking for a good Guard, Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen and wife Annabel. Restaurant topper Aaron Placourakis joined the party for a birthday dessert ...

WHILE I can't vouch for the veracity of this translation, a Hawaiian reader noticed that the federal security agents at the airport wear shoulder patches with the Hawaiian language phrase: " 'A 'Ole Makou E Poina Ole." He claims it means "We never remember," while they surely intended to say, "We never forget." ...

THERE'LL be live coverage on K-5 of the Miss Hawaii contest Friday at 7:30 p.m. from the Hilton's Coral Ballroom. Eleven young women will vie to represent Hawaii in the Miss America contest and, who knows, maybe even claim the crown, as did Caroline Sapp in 1991 and Angela Perez Baraquio, Miss Hawaii in 2000 ...

YOU'll forgive Hula Grill Sous Chef Bobby Masters if he appears a bit crabby these days. He and his crew served more than 2,000 crabcakes in a two-hour period at the Taste of Kauai event. It took the culinary crew longer to prepare the crustacean delicacies than it did to sell them. One observer swears some of the crew were walking sideways by day's end ...

Aloha, Linda

WORD spread quickly yesterday about the death of longtime visitor industry figure and friend Linda Chun Adams. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer just three weeks ago and went quickly and quietly. She was a mere 54. The former public relations head of the Halekulani, Linda moved around a bit, opening the Laguna Niguel Ritz Carlton and most recently the St. Regis, also in Laguna Niguel. Her ashes will be scattered off Redondo Beach ...
