Chamberlain makes
news with revelation

WHEN Richard Chamberlain set out to promote his new book, he started getting people talking about it by coming out of the closet and revealing he was gay. Jay Leno on the "Tonight" show said the former Dr. Kildare must have been the only person in America who was surprised by the news. Then Chamberlain was interviewed by Katie Couric on the "Today" show yesterday and revealed he'd known since early childhood. But he had a point in saying "gay or straight" is just a choice one makes, but not nearly as important as "good or bad," adding that there are both in each category. He's done a lot of good in Honolulu, helping with fund-raising efforts for such enterprises as PBS. He didn't talk about the Significant Other he shared a house with on Tantalus ...

HAWAII born and raised Bette Midler has been quiet on both the movie and record making fronts of late, but is now in a studio singing a tribute to the singer she used to hear while attending Radford High, the late Rosemary Clooney. Work on the CD was held up a bit when Bette's old gay bathhouse performance days collaborator and pianist, Barry Manilow, walked into a wall and broke his nose. With that proboscis, all he'd have to do is walk near the wall to make contact ...

Turnbull in E.R.

IT wasn't the television show of the same name, but making an appearance in a real emergency room recently was actor-turned-pastor Bob Turnbull, the former Chaplain of Waikiki Beach. He'd been suffering from back pain and didn't take well to a combination of two painkilling medicines. Wife Yvonne called 911 and by the time Bob checked into the E.R. nearest his Virginia home, he was on a roll. Asked if he was allergic to anything, he deadpanned, "Yes, sin." He also announced that if he needed mouth-to-mouth he wanted no male nurses, "Just one who was a former Miss Virginia." And as Yvonne wheeled him to his car the next day, a nurse whispered to her, "Anytime he has a bad reaction again, be sure he comes to this hospital -- your husband is one of the funniest and friendliest patients we've ever had." ...

NOT one to waste time on long engagements, food writer Jo McGarry and radio sports guy Bobbie Curran got married this week. It was just before doctors decided to induce labor on the fortysomething bride yesterday. I'm aware of this because I was talked into joining old friend Don Robbs of KKEA into filling in for Jo and Bobby on their morning radio show this morning ...

Donny and Mo

HARD at work on his latest project right here in Hawaii is Donny Osmond, with no help from Marie or even the Osbournes. Donny and son Brandon were on the Battleship Missouri on Wednesday, shooting a new Travel Channel show highlighting some of America's most historical travel destinations. Though Osmond wasn't around at the time, the Mo was the site of Japan's surrender to Allied Forces in 1945, ending World War II. Osmond will also be doing a show from the USS Arizona Memorial ...
