Part of North Kona loses power after crash

An estimated 2,600 North Kona residents on the Big Island were without power Monday afternoon after a car knocked down a transmission pole.

Hawaii Electric Light Co. officials said the pole was knocked down at 3:09 p.m. and that power was restored by 4:11 p.m.

Sex-assault fugitive is sought by police

Police are looking for a sex-assault fugitive who may have fled the state.

Police said Benjamin Cortex Swift, 22, pleaded guilty to first- and second-degree sexual- assault charges after having consensual sex with a 12-year-old girl last year.

Swift did not make his court date for sentencing, however, and police believe he may be living on the mainland with relatives.

CrimeStoppers warns of lottery fee scheme

CrimeStoppers is warning the public to be aware of several recent cases involving an advance-fee scheme with suspects pretending to be representing officials for the Canadian or Australian lottery.

The scheme involves suspects calling victims and telling them they won the lottery but need to pay an advance fee via Western Union to different locations in Canada. The fees range from $500 to $3,000.

Anyone with information on similar cases is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.
