Hawaii starts out sixth
in ISA championship

It might take a day or two for the Hawaii women's sailing team to get adjusted to competing on Lake St. Clair (Detroit). The Rainbow Wahine may not have that much time.

With a relatively light wind (5-8 knots) and 70 degree air, Hawaii is in sixth place after the first day of racing in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association North American women's championship. The regatta began yesterday at Grosse Pointe Yacht Club and runs through tomorrow. The championship is comprised of 18 races in each of the A and B divisions.

Hawaii has 70 points through 10 races (six A division, four B division). Both Hawaii teams are in sixth place in their divisions. Tufts University leads the regatta with 29 points. The Jumbos did not have a double-digit finish in any of their races and will be tough to catch if they continue to sail consistently. Dartmouth College is in a distant second with 46 points while St. Mary's College (Md.) is third with 53 points.

Dias stepping down as Moanalua coach

Roy Dias wanted to talk to his Moanalua players before last week's published report that he's leaving as girls basketball coach.

But he still plans on calling a meeting and explaining to the Menehunes why he's stepping down after three years.

"The players were probably wondering why I hadn't talked to them first," Dias said yesterday. "I did not want them to find out that way. So I want to take this opportunity to let them know my decision has nothing to do with them. I have a lot of things that I need to focus on personally in my life right now.

"There is a fantastic team coming back and whoever is the next coach will have a bunch of talented and coachable players."

Moanalua went 10-0 in the regular season, captured the Oahu Interscholastic Association championship and finished third at the state tournament this spring.

In other Moanalua athletic news, Tommy Lake is the new volleyball coach, replacing Sheri Sagayaga, whose contract was not renewed after a review following the fall season.

Porter, Hegedus honored by QB Club

After sweeping NCAA national championships last month, the Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis teams swept the Honolulu Quarterback Club's monthly awards.

BYUH coach Dave Porter was the QB Club's male sportsman of the month while his top player, sophomore Adrienn Hegedus, was named the female sportsperson of the month.

Porter's women's teams are 169-1 over the past five years while his men are 138-18.

ITA All-Americans: Four Hawaii athletes were put on the ITA Division II All-American team yesterday.

Making the list were HPU's Gabor Jaross and Mikael Maata along with BYUH's Jan Krejci and Peter Madarassy.

HSC Bulls claim first perfect MISO season

The HSC Bulls beat HPU White 2-0 to sweep through the Men's Island Soccer Organization season yesterday.

Max Anton and Richard Higa scored while David Semenza shut out HPU.

The win gave the Bulls the league double, adding the MISO Cup to the Robledo Cup the won earlier this year.

In the Division II championship, Yuji Ikeda scored a pair of goals but couldn't stop his International squad from falling to Kamikaze in a penalty kick shootout 4-3.
