Summer ushers in
plethora of live concerts

ONE WAY you can tell summer has arrived is by the increase in live entertainment scheduled both during the week and on weekends.

Now most of the time when you visit Aloha Tower Marketplace, a cover charge is usually involved to check out a band at one of the restaurants. The start of "Saturday at the Tower" this weekend, however, means local residents can enjoy an evening of music and fun for free.

Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning artists Olomana and Karen Keawehawai'i are scheduled to start the summer concert series at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Chairs and lau hala mats will be provided for folks in front of the stage between Gordon Biersch and Don Ho's Island Grill, and a variety of food and product booths will be open as well. 99.5 the Breeze's Ola Souza emcees; call 536-2337 for more info ...

SPOKEN-WORD POETRY continues to flourish around town, and Lee A. Tonouchi will do his part to help tomorrow night at Borders Ward Centre. "Planny Planny Poets 2" begins at 7 p.m. and features the "Protectors of Poetic Expression" as they team up with the "Super Heroes of da Spoken Word" to battle against the "Cartel of Language Infused with Commonplace Hackneyed Evil." Sounds like fun ...

REGGAE MUSIC makes its first appearance at Cafe Sistina tomorrow night starting at 10 p.m., and what better way to kick things off than a party with Maacho and Cool Connection? Electronica, hip-hop and Latin music have had a shot at using the venue on South King Street for events; now it's time to head down there and get your skank on. Call 596-0061 ...

HERE'S ANOTHER CHANCE for the ladies to get discovered: The "Island Pop Model Search" takes place Saturday at the Hawai'i Convention Center.

An application fee of $20 will be charged for everyone who shows up, but it just may be worth it for a shot at a modeling contract and an opportunity to appear in an upcoming Island Pop calendar. Call 923-1552 for details ...

MOST PEOPLE HEADING to the "T&C/Surfer Magazine Air Invitational" on Saturday afternoon at Queen's Surf in Waikiki will be going to see the likes of Gavin Sutherland, Jason Shibata, Kawika Stillwell and other talented local surfers.

As for me, I'll be heading down to see if I can catch a glimpse of the beautiful Leeann Tweeden, one of the hosts of "54321," an extreme sports television show that airs on Fox Sports Net. She'll be signing autographs at 10:30 a.m. near the Duke Kahanamoku statue fronting Kuhio Beach ...
