Self-illumination 101

The Naikan method of introspection and psychotherapy will be taught in lectures and a retreat next month.

The method, formulated in Japan 50 years ago by Buddhist minister Ishin Yoshimoto, is taught in centers in Japan, Europe and North America.

Speaking here will be David Reynolds, director of the Constructive Living Institute, an author and teacher of Japanese psychotherapy practices, and the Rev. Mari Sengoku, a Naikan therapist and director of the Office of Buddhist Education at the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii.

Sengoku said the method is used in mental health counseling and rehabilitation, but is also "a source of self-illumination for mentally healthy people."

The free public lectures, "Naikan: a Journey in Self Discovery," will be presented at the following locations:

June 28: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Buddhist Study Center, 1436 University Ave.
June 29: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Kahului Hongwanji Mission, Maui.
July 1: 7-9 p.m., Hanapepe Hongwanji Mission, Kauai.

May 31 is the deadline for reservations for the five-day Naikan retreat, June 21 to 26 at St. Anthony Retreat Center in Kalihi. The $450 fee includes meals and housing. Fees will be prorated for those staying fewer days. Call Sengoku at 522-9212.

Turtle Bay action fest

Paddleboarders and bicyclers will be racing for the finish line June 21, regardless of the fact that the day has been set aside to honor the slow-moving turtle.

Turtle Bay Resort is hosting a triumvirate of events that day: the second-annual Turtle Festival, Turtle Races for bikers and the North Shore Lifeguard Associations Summer Solstice Paddleboard Race.

The festival, with art displays, food booths and entertainment, runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

To enter the bike race call the Bike Factory, 596-8844. Paddleboarders should call 638-8297.
