Police and
sheriffs catch 2
work camp escapees

Also in custody are a man and
his daughter found with the pair

State sheriffs and Honolulu police following up on tips yesterday recaptured two inmates who escaped from the Laumaka Work Furlough Center on Friday.

Michael Rosado, 28, and Rockford Matsuura, 22, were arrested at about 4:30 p.m. in Whitmore Village, said CrimeStoppers coordinator Letha DeCaires.

A 49-year-old man and his 23-year-old daughter found with the men were also taken into custody on outstanding arrest warrants, DeCaires added.

Sheriffs and members of the Wahiawa Crime Reduction Unit arrested the escapees and the father and daughter without incident, DeCaires said.

Public safety officials said Rosado and Matsuura were processed at the District Court in Honolulu and taken to the Oahu Community Correctional Facility.

Rosado was convicted of attempted murder and burglary, and had been in prison since February 1993. Matsuura had been incarcerated since August 1998 for armed robbery and theft.

Neither man was considered dangerous, said Oahu Community Correctional Center Warden Francis Sequeira.

Rosado and Matsuura made their way out of the minimum-security Laumaka facility sometime between 10 p.m. Thursday and 2 a.m. Friday. They apparently left after the evening bed count and intended to return before the early morning count, Sequeira said.

Rosado was due to be released in December, and Matsuura in November, Sequeira said.

Rosado was convicted of attempted murder in May 1994. The following February, the Hawaii Paroling Authority set Rosado's minimum sentence at 10 years.

Rosado completed the 10 years on Feb. 3. By then he had also completed his sentences for a robbery and three burglary convictions. When he applied for parole in December, the Paroling Authority denied his request and instead recommended him for work furlough, said Tommy Johnson, Hawaii Paroling Authority administrator.
