Having fun, naturally


THOSE annoying phrases, "I'm bored" and "There's nothing to do," can grate on a parent's nerves, especially when the complaining child has a room full of toys, computer games and a whole world to explore. If you'd prefer not to have their kids hanging around this summer, you do have options. Many programs are available for children of all ages.

animal exploration

Honolulu Zoo sessions will be held through Aug. 22. Daily rates are $40 to $50; weekly rates are $160 to $200. Call 971-7195:

Vacation Adventures: Day camp allows children ages 5 to 11 to spend a day or a week exploring the zoo. Partial day sessions run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; all-day sessions run from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The shorter session focuses on care of zoo animals, behind-the-scenes encounters and the importance of conservation and saving endangered wildlife. The longer session may include animal games and art projects.

Waikiki Aquarium sesisons are held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 9 to 13 and July 28 to Aug. 1. Call 923-9741, ext. 8-107.

"Marine Science Aquanauts": Learn about marine biology in the water and in-lab experiences at the aquarium and Hanauma Bay.

"Kinetic Sculptures": Use art and science to make moving sculptures; 3-4 p.m. weekdays in June and July; $20 per class.

"Simply Sushi for Kids Only": A hands-on class that teaches the basics of preparing cone sushi and musubi; 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 2; $25. For grades 4 to 6.

"Garden Chefs -- Garden Science": Five days of activities including planting, harvesting, hikes, art, science and cooking; 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 4 to 8; $160. For grades 1 to 4.

Stage One: Held at Temple Emanu-El, 2550 Pali Highway, for kids 7 to 12. Explore the play-building process from concept to final performance. Kids are involved with the creation of a play and develop roles for themselves.

Stage Two: An intensive summer course for young actors ages 13 to 18 at Mid-Pacific School of the Arts in Manoa. The focus is on William Shakespeare's life, times, plays and poetry, culminating in a performance. Students will explore what Shakespeare's characters have in common with teenagers in Hawaii.

Keiki Kani Music Studios: For musicians of all ages and levels of experience. Courses in June and July include introduction to music, guitar and performing choir; First Steps (for newborns to age 4); beginning and accelerated piano; and music composition and theory. Symphony Camp: One-week music camp for beginning and intermediate string musicians in grades 8 to 12; July 20 to 26. The camp meets at various times and locations. Students must have played their instrument for at least two years. Call the Honolulu Symphony at 941-9706 to register.

"Destination Planet Palooza": Learn to surf, swim, canoe, kayak or sail. The day camp runs June 10 to Aug. 20 and includes an overnight mountain stay in the Waianae Mountains above Makakilo.

"X4Teens": Youths ages 10 to 17 can choose to surf, sail or engage in mountain adventures June 15 to Aug. 18. A seven-week camping package is also available for June 9 through July 25, with a Big Island option June 23 to 27.

Specialty camps: Kama'aina Kids offers several other day camps at Sea Life Park, Bishop Museum, Heeia State Park and Hawaiian Adventures Water Park. Call for details.
