New jobs

>> The Cancer Research Center of Hawaii has named Cheryl Lynn Albright and David Leslie O'Riordan researchers for the social and behavioral sciences program, Nina Etkin a researcher in the clinical sciences program, Leo Wang-Kit Cheung a biostatistician in the epidemiology section, and Kerry K. Kakazu assistant director of operations. Albright spent more than 16 years as a senior research scientist at the Center for Research in Disease Prevention at Stanford University School of Medicine. O'Riordan most recently served as a research officer with the South West Zonal Public Health Unit at Queensland Health in Australia. Etkin has been graduate chair for the University of Hawaii at Manoa anthropology department since 2002. Cheung's area of research involves developing and applying computational methods to cancer research. Kakazu served as a postdoctoral research fellow at the center from 1989 to 1991. He was most recently director of academic computing and assistant professor of biology at Chaminade University.

>> Island Insurance Cos. has hired Kurt R. Lemon as loss control representative. He will be responsible for providing loss control assistance to the company's corporate clients and will complete loss control surveys and analysis. He was most recently with the nonprofit insurance advisory organization Hawaii Insurance Bureau.

Promotions

>> The Lyle Anderson Company Inc. has promoted John De Fries to chief executive officer of its Hokulia development in south Kona on the Big Island. The company has named Pieter Lems as executive vice president in charge of daily operations. De Fries will lead Hokulia into a new phase of development. Lems will guide and implement the operating committee's strategic objectives and overall operations management.

>> General engineering contractor firm Kaikor Construction Associates Inc. has promoted Erik Snyder from estimator to vice president of estimating. He will manage all project bids and be responsible for project selection. He joined the company in 1996 as a co-op engineer through a University of Hawaii training program and was promoted to neighbor island manager and eventually to estimator.

>> Helber Hastert & Fee Planners Inc. has promoted Liane Nakamura to associate. Her responsibilities include overseeing the administrative, financial and human resources operations of the firm. She is the first non-planning professional recognized as an associate for her service and dedication to the firm. She joined the company in 1991 and is its office manager.

>> Cutter Automotive has promoted Pat Ah You to general manager of Cutter Ford Aiea and Gary Scheuring to general manager of Ala Moana Volkswagen-Mazda. Ah You has been with the company since 1977, most recently as Ala Moana Volkswagen-Mazda general manager. Scheuring has been sales manager at Ala Moana since 1995 and has been with the company since 1994.

>> American Savings Bank has promoted two assistant vice presidents and branch sales managers: Ernie Muyano, Kalihi branch; and Martin Tadlas, Kaneohe Kahuhipa branch. Muyano has been with the bank for more than five years and in the industry for more than 11 years. His experience includes consumer loans, residential loans and small business accounts. Tadlas has been with the bank for two years and in the industry for more than 11 years. His experience includes bookkeeping, operations, consumer loans and small business accounts.

>> Mary Paahana has been promoted to U.S. and international sales and sales event manager at Aston Hotels & Resorts Hawaii. She will assist in managing wholesale accounts, coordinating tours of the company's properties, organizing trade shows and managing special events. She was previously Aston Hotels' Asia sales department senior sales manager and has worked for the company for more than 10 years.

>> Jay Rubenstein has been promoted to director of group sales at the Fairmont Orchid. He has 15 years of experience in the hospitality industry, most recently as account director at the Big Island resort.

>> Milici Valenti Ng Pack has promoted Tara Smith and Victoria Wong from account coordinator to assistant account executive. Smith will continue to handle the McDonald's of Hawaii and Pacific Business News accounts. Wong will continue to work on the Aloha Airlines and Alexander & Baldwin accounts. They both joined the company in 2002.

>> Gov. Linda Lingle has appointed John J. Toner to serve on an interim basis on the Hawaii Tourism Authority board. To serve a full term, he will need to be confirmed by the Senate when the Legislature reconvenes. Toner is executive vice president of Ko Olina Resort, where he oversees operations, branding and develop- ment. He has 30 years of hospitality industry experience.

>> The Hawaii Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association has elected Stephen A. J. W. Lung president. Other new officers for 2003-04 are: Dean H. Tateyama, president-elect; Keith R. Ridley, secretary; and Jodi M. Nakamura, treasurer. Directors are Brian A. Higgins, Michelle M. Kakazu, Pauline M. Osborne and Kathleen M. Cain. Lung is director of provider services at HMSA. The HFMA is a national organization for health care professionals.
