Memorial Day
rites scheduled


Kaneohe Marines will hold this year's first Memorial Day remembrance with a sunset ceremony beginning at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Pacific War Memorial.

The memorial, which depicts the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima, is located near the front gate of Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

Saturday, the Hawaii Buddhist Council holds its annual Memorial Day service at 9 a.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl.

Sunday, the Rev. Masa Takizawa will lead a memorial service sponsored by the Honolulu Shinto Renmi. The service will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Punchbowl. At noon Sunday, more than 2,000 Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will perform their annual "Good Deed" service project planting miniature American flags and leis sewn by isle schoolchildren at the headstones in Punchbowl crater.

The annual "roll call of honor" will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday at Punchbowl. The event honors all Pacific Americans who served in the military.

Retired Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Bruce Matheson is keynote speaker at a Memorial Day service at 7:15 a.m. Monday at the USS Arizona Visitor Center.

The mayor's annual Memorial Day ceremony at Punchbowl is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Monday. Starting at 7:45 a.m., shuttle bus service will be available at parking lot at Alapai and Beretania streets.

The governor's annual Memorial Day service will begin at 1 p.m. at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe.
