Isle tuberculosis center
returns to Lanakila Center

The state Tuberculosis Control Program will be closed one week starting tomorrow while it moves back to its original quarters at the Lanakila Health Center, the state Health Department announced.

The center at 1700 Lanakila Ave., Kalihi, was closed for renovations in February last year. Services will resume there May 27.

The new facility will have a state-of-the-art digital X-ray unit and a negative air pressure system, which is ideal for an infectious disease clinic, said Dr. Jessie Wing, chief of the DOH TB Control Program.

The system cleans the air and expels it, preventing it from recirculation, she said. The clinic also will have ultraviolet light and special filters to clean areas, she said.

The clinic will be open for TB skin tests from 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. every weekday except Thursday.

Chest X-ray services will move from Leahi Hospital to the Lanakila Clinic next month. Patients can call the TB information line at 832-5738 to confirm the location and hours of X-ray services.

All services offered by the DOH TB program are free, including skin tests, chest X-rays, TB evaluations and medications.

Parking is free. Patients can access the clinic from the building's ground-level entrance, near the lower parking lot.

Temporary clinics operating since February last year at Dillingham Shopping Plaza and Leahi Hospital will be closed when the Lanakila clinic is fully operational.

A grand-opening celebration will be held at the new clinic at 9:30 a.m. July 17 with tours, entertainment and health information. For more information, call the 24-hour TB information line, 832-5738; the TB program staff, 832-5731; or see the Hawaii TB Web site at www.hawaii.gov/doh/resource/comm_dis/tb.
