Lingle untangles isle auto shipping process

Gov. Linda Lingle has joined the Legislature in simplifying the lives of Hawaii's military personnel getting transferred elsewhere. Lingle recently signed into law a bill that exempts vehicles with an out-of-state lienholder to receive authorization before bringing the car to Hawaii, her office said.

Hawaii was in a unique position to have a law requiring a finance company's authorization before a vehicle with a lien can be shipped out of the state. Bankers liked the law because it prevented car buyers from skipping out on loans.

While military personnel getting transferred out of Hawaii were given an exemption from that law, there was still a problem with vehicles on which an out-of-state finance company held the note. The new law eliminates that problem.

Body washes ashore on Coconut Island

A murder investigation has been opened into the death of a man whose body apparently washed up on Coconut Island in Kaneohe Bay yesterday morning, Honolulu police Lt. Bill Kato said.

The man, who appeared to be in his 20s, had several bullet wounds to the upper body, Kato said. He was discovered before 8:45 a.m. by a security worker at the Hawaii Institute for Marine Biology, which has a lab on the island.

The man was wearing a gray T-shirt, beige shorts and black sandals, Kato said.

"There was a card on body, but we're not sure if it's his because there was no photo," he said.

Kato said there have been no reports to police of a man in his 20s being missing. "It definitely wasn't someone from Coconut Island," he said. "It looks like the body may have washed ashore."

An autopsy will be done on the body tomorrow, Kato said.

Puna man, 18, dies in collision with truck

An 18-year-old Puna man is dead after a two-car accident yesterday morning on the Keaau-Pahoa Highway in Keaau.

Sunny Kang, of Kurtistown, was driving a 1999 Acura southbound on the highway when he apparently lost control of the car while changing lanes and collided with a 1994 Nissan pickup, said a Hawaii County Police Department spokesman.

Police were called to the crash scene at 11:36 a.m., and Kang was pronounced dead at 12:26 p.m. at Hilo Hospital.

The occupants of the truck, Tadeo Santiago, 82, and Rosalie Santiago, 19, of Hawaiian Beaches, were treated for injuries at Hilo Hospital, police said.

High speed and heavy rain were believed to be factors in the accident.

Shots fired in scrap at Ala Moana Center

A 25-year-old man was arrested for attempted murder early yesterday morning for an incident that allegedly occurred at a bar in Ala Moana Center.

Police said that at about 11:37 p.m., a male suspect was in the bar and got into an argument with the 31-year-old victim. Police said the suspect allegedly threatened to kill the other man and then left the bar, taking the escalator to the mall level.

Police said that when the victim walked to his car, the suspect appeared and threatened to kill him. The suspect allegedly pointed a semiautomatic handgun in the direction of the suspect and fired twice, missing him.

The suspect then allegedly pointed the gun at the victim's chest. When the gun misfired, the victim allegedly punched the suspect, which knocked the gun out of his hand as he fell backward.

A witness allegedly grabbed the handgun and called police.

Police said the suspect was later located at the Ala Moana Hotel, where he was identified and arrested. Charges have not been filed.
