Wahine shut
out on day 3


El Paso, Texas >> Hawaii senior Diosa Hussey had UH's best individual performance on the third day of the WAC track and field championships yesterday.

Hussey, who prepped at Baldwin, was fourth in her flight in the shot put, tossing the weight 12.96 meters. Novelle Murray was seventh for the Wahine at 11.73 meters.

Neither performance was good enough to score any team points, though.

Hawaii stands in last place with three points after three days, eight behind UTEP. Nevada leads the standings with 85 points, followed by Rice with 42.5 and Louisiana Tech with 35.

All-America honors for Saint Louis' Spiker

Saint Louis senior Jonathan Spiker was selected as a high school All-American by Wrestling USA Magazine.

Spiker is only the second wrestler in the state to have won four state championships.

Spiker is graduating as the salutatorian of his class and will be attending Harvard.

Matsui lifts sixth-place trophy

Chani Matsui, a 16-year old Kamehameha sophomore, placed sixth in the 2003 National Weightlifting Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn., this week. Matsui was the only weightlifter from Hawaii.

The winner of Matsui's weight class was 2000 Olympic gold medal winner Tara Nott.

Tennis festival set for Central Regional Park

USA Tennis Rock & Rally, a music and tennis festival sponsored by the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section, is scheduled for tomorrow at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The day features on- and off-court activities for both adults and children.

The event is also part of the "May is USA Tennis Month" celebration. Free one-hour tennis lessons will be given between 3-5 p.m. for youth, ages 6-13, and adults 14-older.

Shimonovich honored by Jewish Sports Review

The Jewish Sports Review has selected Hawaii junior center Haim Shimonovich to its All-America first team, the second year that the Isaeli national has been chosen.

Shimonovich averaged a career-high 7.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last year. Joining Shimonovich on the first team are Amit Tamir (California), AmirBar-Netzer (Cal State Fullerton), Matt Minoff (Yale), and Dave Klatsky (Penn).

Amateur boxing card set for Pearl City site

Boxers from Maui, the Big Island and Oahu will compete on today's amateur boxing card at the Professional Training Center Gym in Pearl City.

Fifteen bouts are scheduled, beginning at 6 p.m. Admission is $7.

The event is a fund-raiser to help send Hawaii's team of 15-16 year-old champions to the National Junior Olympic Boxing Championship, June 15-21, in Alexandria, La.

Kauai's Otsuji looking to keep hold on Maui

Defending series champion Marvin Otsuji of Kauai goes for his third consecutive victory when the Aston Hawaii Sailing Canoe Race Series continues today on Maui.

The Kamakakoa, captained by Otsuji, is one of eight sailing canoes entered in the Kahakuloa Challenge, which should get started at 10 a.m., conditions permitting. The course runs from Kahului to Kapanapali, where the Aston-sponsored canoe festival will be held.

Tomorrow, the sailing canoes will compete in the Pelekunu Challenge, crossing the Pailolo Channel, to Kaluakoi, Molokai.

Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association races are also scheduled for June 21-22, July 26, and Sept. 20. For information on the series, visit www.hsca.biz.

Aiona, Hannemann at Quarterback Club

Lt. Governor James 'Duke' Aiona, Mufi Hannemann and Mel deLaura, strength and conditioning coach at Hawaii, will be the guest speakers at Monday's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

The luncheon, open to the public, begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant. The cost is $7.50 for members, $8 for nonmembers.

Point guard Cabagnot signs with Vulcans

Alex Cabagnot, a 6-foot-1 point guard from Los Angeles Valley College, has signed a national letter of intent play basketball at the University of Hawaii-Hilo.

Cabagnot completed his LAVC career averaging over 10 points and six assists per game. In 27 games, he committed only 37 turnovers.

Maui Tour tourney at Wailea Emerald

The Maui Tour golf tournament, a 2-man team best ball and 18-hole stroke play competition, is scheduled for May 26 at the Wailea Emerald Course.
