Hawaii's Amanda Page was second in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 1 inch at the WAC outdoor track and field competition yesterday in El Paso, Texas.

at WAC track


Amanda Page and Lana Phillips of Hawaii were in eighth and ninth place going into today's final three events of the heptathlon at the Western Athletic Conference track and field championships at El Paso, Texas.

Page had 2,393 points and Phillips 2,325 after yesterday's events, which included the 200 meters, 100-meter hurdles, shot put and high jump.

Page set personal bests in the 200 (29.10) and 100 hurdles (17.24) and Phillips ran her personal best in the 200 (27.17).

Ruthann Gairdner of Rice led with 3,170 points.

Today's events are the long jump, javelin and 800 meters.

The meet continues tomorrow and Saturday.

Nepo named McKinley girls volleyball coach

Fiona Nepo, one of the best college volleyball players to ever come out of Hawaii, returns to her alma mater of McKinley High School as head girls coach this fall.

After being named the high school state Player of the Year in 1994, Nepo went to Nebraska where she was a three-year starter at setter, winning All-American honors all three years.

She was a member of the 1995 national championship team.

Nepo's coaching experience includes assistant stints at Nebraska, Chaminade and Sacred Hearts and Kaimuki high schools.

Nepo replaces Erin Coker.

Lopez ousts Irons in quarterfinals

Cory Lopez of Florida ousted reigning world and defending champion Andy Irons of Kauai in the quarterfinals of the Billabong Pro surfing event at Teahupoo, Tahiti yesterday.

Irons took an early lead with a backhand cutback for a 9.6, but Lopez came back strong later with a 9.67 barrel.

Kalani Robb and Shane Dorian of Hawaii both advanced. Robb outsurfed CJ Hobgood of Florida and Dorian defeated Conan Hayes, also of Hawaii.

Spots available for Perry Memorial

Entries are still being accepted for Saturday morning's 8th annual George Perry Memorial Keiki Race off Kailua Beach.

Hosted by Lanikai Canoe Club, the event is comprised of seven distance races, ranging from a half mile to four miles. The age-group competition is in boys and girls 10-under; girls, boys and mixed 12-14; and girls, boys and mixed 15-18.

The event kicks off Lanikai Canoe Club's 50th anniversary celebration.
