Oceanic goes
to the dogs --
in a good way

NOT ALL news out of the Hawaiian Humane Association has to do with doggie mills in the home. Plans continue for Petwalk 2003, a fund-raiser taking place June 22. When Humane Society honcho Pamela Burns went to meet with Oceanic Time Warner Cable v.p. of marketing Alan Pollock, she feared talking him into being a sponsor for the Petwalk would be a hard sell. But when she sat down in his office and saw the photo of Pollock's wife and their black Lab on his desk, Pam breathed a sigh of relief. Turns out Ruby Pollock and Haku have been volunteering with the Humane Society's pet-visitation program for eight years. Now Oceanic, along with USA Network, have donated their sponsorship and Oceanic is even putting together a team of walkers to raise pledges for programs such as the pet visitation ...

LOCALITE Ray Sweeney thought he'd heard the last of sporting accomplishments of his uncle, George Bignotti, famed Indy 500 race car builder and operator, but it was not to be. Bignotti built cars were the first to score seven Indy 500 wins (thanks in no small part to drivers like A.J. Foyt and Al Unser) but Sweeney just got word that Bignotti has not retired from golfing. And wouldn't you know that the legendary Indy hero has added to his luster around Indy. At 87, he has scored another first -- a hole-in-one on a course near the speedway. Kent Liffick, brother of local resident Cathy Reinhart, passed the word along to Sweeney, knowing it would make him swell with family pride ...

Solid Brickwood

ALOHA Fridays at Brew Moon in Ward Centre have taken on the aura of Dukes or perhaps the late, lamented Watertown. Hosting the Friday bashes is Brickwood Galuteria, or as the late Moe Keale always called him, Driftwood Cafeteria. Dropping by and gigging on stage were the likes of Don Ho, Melveen Leed and Andy Bumatai. Buddy Fo sat in one evening, a special one for Brickwood as his music includes the four-part harmony sound of Fo's. Last Friday saw Marlene Sai, Li'l Albert Maligmat, Kimo Kahoano, Gary Aiko and Ihilani Miller, helping to make it a fun night. Brickwood will continue for the next three Fridays, take a break in June, and return through July and August ...

DO you know about Hawaii's young Danny Fuller? You may well in the near future. Hitting newsstands yesterday was Teen Vogue's June/July issue which features Fuller ...

Chicago lingers on

NEVER mind that Stephen Sondheim's "Follies" is being produced by Diamond Head Theatre beginning May 23. The songs from the musical that premiered in 1971 remain vital. But DHT can't get "Chicago" out of its mind, and has chosen "All that Jazz" as the theme for a fund-raiser gala at Waialae Country Club May 31. Entertaining that evening will be two actresses who appeared in DHT's "Chicago" production earlier this season. One of the 100 items in a silent auction is a copy of the film script based on the musical ...
