tuneup for WAC

EAGLE ROCK, Calif. >> Hawaii distance runner Victoria Chang won another race last night, taking the 5,000-meter run at the Oxy Invitational.

Chang ran the distance in 16 minutes, 48 seconds to beat her closest competitor by 18 seconds. She was the only Hawaii athlete to win an event.

Hawaii almost had another winner, as Robin McRobbie took second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Nicole Wright set a personal best in the 200-meter dash with a 29.02 while Hanna Bremler took sixth in the 1,500-meter run in 4:38.07.

The team is tuning up for the WAC Championships next week in El Paso, Texas.

Aulea hires second coach in 48 years

Kailua's Aulea Swim Club announced the hiring of the second head coach in its 48-year history.

Christopher Zarka returns to Hawaii after a stint away that included being the 2002 Southern California Zone coach, coach of the 2000 Bahamian national championship team and winning the 1999 Central Michigan and Lansing State Journal coach of the year awards.

Zarka replaces Hawaii Swimming Hall of Fame charter honoree Al Minn, who helped found Aulea in 1955 and had served as its coach ever since.
