HPU women’s
tennis team advances

POMONA, Calif. >> Loni Matsunaga and Dada Joksimovic came from behind to beat Cal Poly Pomona 5-4 and put the Hawaii Pacific women's tennis team into the round of 16 of the NCAA Division II tennis championships yesterday.

The Sea Warriors will join HPU's men's team and both Brigham Young-Hawaii teams at Altamonte Springs, Fla., May 8-11.

HPU trailed Pomona 4-3 with just Matsunaga and Joksimovic remaining on the court and both needing to win. Matsunaga put away Dehlia Feliz 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 just before Joksimovic closed out Michelle Hammond 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

The Sea Warriors were put in a hole immediately by losing two of the three doubles matches, but Matsunaga and Joksimovic fought through a tiebreaker to beat Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis and Hammond 9-8.

Davilyn Godinet and Shakti Stream earned points for HPU with wins in the fifth and sixth positions, but Bianca Barreto lost at No. 3 and HPU ace Dora Holdarova was swept by Ortiz-Luis to put the pressure on Matsunaga and Joksimovic.

The HPU women (11-5) will play Grand Canyon (21-3) while the HPU men (16-3) take on North Florida. The BYUH men (26-1) start the round of 16 against Lander (14-4), who upset South Carolina-Spartansburg Saturday, and the Seasider women (33-0) play Armstrong Atlantic (21-8).

Hawaii sailing team wins Dinghy title

The top Hawaii sailing team won six races and finished second in five others to score 16 points and take the PCIYRA dinghy championships at the US Sailing Center in Los Angeles, Calif., yesterday.

Hawaii's "B" team won two races to give the school 48 points. Their combined total just beat Stanford's score of 69. USC finished with 77 points for third place.

The Trojans are protesting the scoring, but it doesn't impact UH's win.

Hawaii started off the contest with wins by both of its teams and led by two points going into the final races. Both UH teams finished second in their races while Stanford's finished third and fourth to give UH the title.

USC's "A" and "B" teams won the final races.
