Ryu Hidani, held by his mom, Yumiko, had paint brushed onto his foot ready to create a tegata, or Japanese handprint. Because he was so young, his foot was used instead so he would not accidentally get paint in his mouth when he sucked his hand.

At the Hawaii Kai boat ramp yesterday, Derek Kurihara maneuvered a 26-pound mahimahi, one of six mahi that he and Kevin Loui caught aboard the boat Charann. The catch was a bonus for the crew, which was escorting a kayak race from Molokai.
