Talk by Florida artist
opens annual raku
pottery festival

The 27th annual Raku Hoolaulea, celebrating the mystery of raku firing, takes place this month and next with events in town and at Kualoa Regional Park.

This year's guest artist, Harvey Sadow, will start the fest with a free slide talk at the Honolulu Academy of Art at 7 p.m. May 27. The talk will be preceded by a 5:30 p.m. reception. Sadow is chairman of the ceramics department at Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, Fla. He is known worldwide for the unique raku-fired surfaces he has developed over the past 35 years.

A pioneer in surface-revision techniques such as multiple raku firing and sandblasting, his work is found in public collections including Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, Guangdong-Shiwan Museum of Ceramic Art in China and the White House Collection.

Demonstrations of raku firing, tea-bowl making and raku glazing will take place during the four-day hoolaulea at Kualoa, where groups of artists from around the world fire up their kilns beachside.

The schedule:

May 28: Clay demonstration and potluck, 5 to 9 p.m., University of Hawaii's Windward Palanikila Building; free.

May 29 through June 1: The Raku Hoolaulea, Kualoa Regional Park (registration required to fire with a group or camp).

May 31: Glaze tea bowls for firing in a community kiln, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Kualoa Park. Cost is $5 per tea bowl.

June 17 through July 19: Raku Hoolaulea exhibit, the ARTS at Marks Garage, 1159 Nuuanu Ave. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays. The gallery will also be open 30 minutes before each scheduled performance at the arts center.
