Salvation Army receives $15,000 in Bankoh grants

The Salvation Army of Hawaii recently received two grants totaling $15,000 from Bank of Hawaii that will go toward helping children with behavioral problems and families in Guam who were affected by typhoon Pongsona.

A $10,000 grant was awarded to the Salvation Army Family Services' Kula Kokua Day Care in Kaimuki for structural renovations to its facility to accommodate more children who suffer from moderate to severe emotional and behavioral problems. The facility currently cares for children between ages 3 and 9.

A $5,000 grant will go toward ongoing efforts in Guam to assist families whose homes were destroyed in typhoon Pongsona in December.

The grant will help families with clothing, bedding, furniture and other household items.

15-year-old boy dies in one-car Makakilo crash

A 15-year-old boy died yesterday morning from injuries he received in a one-car accident Friday night in Makakilo.

A 17-year-old girl was driving a 1987 four-door, white Honda Accord south on Makakilo Drive when she apparently lost control south of Nohohale Street.

The car went onto a raised traffic island and struck a tree, police reported.

All occupants of the car -- the driver, a 16-year-old girl in the front seat and two 15-year-old boys in the back seat -- were taken to Queen's Medical Center with serious injuries, police said. One of the boys died at 5:30 a.m. yesterday. The condition of the others was not available last night.

Speed appears to have been a factor in the crash and seatbelts were used, police said. It's not clear whether alcohol or drugs were factors.

The death is the 30th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 25 at this time last year.

The Coast Guard sent up a helicopter to search for the swimmers when it received word that a Good Samaritan boat had picked them up at 11:15 a.m.

None of the swimmers, whose age and sex were not available yesterday, required medical treatment, the Coast Guard said.
