Women's Christian group holds meeting

About 700 people are expected to attend a convention of Aglow International, an international Christian women's organization, May 15-18 at the Ala Moana Hotel. It is the first regional conference of the group, formerly called Women Aglow, to be held in Hawaii, according to local organizer Marie Dennis.

The speakers will include Jane Hansen, president of the organization, which has chapters in 151 countries; Barbara Yoder, a leader of the U.S. Strategic Prayer Network and pastor of Shikinah Church in Michigan; and Carolyn Suty, Aglow director for California and Hawaii.

Former Miss Hawaii Leina'ala Drummond will speak at the opening luau May 15. Mary Kamahele Boyd, an instructor at University of Hawaii at Hilo, and the First Assembly of God halau will be part of the luau program.

Tickets are available for the conference. Thursday is the deadline for registration for the luau, cost $45. Registration fee is $110 for the entire conference or $25 for a single meeting.

Chaminade hosts art of mother of Jesus

A collection of art depicting Mary, the mother of Jesus, will be on exhibit at Chaminade University this month through June. 5.

The show, "Celebrate Mary," will open with a reception at 7 tonight at Sullivan Library in Henry Hall. The Rev. Johann Roten, a Marian art expert, will speak and the Honolulu Vocal Arts Ensemble will provide music at the opening event, which is open to the public.

The 35-piece collection is on loan from the University of Dayton's Marian Library. It includes "Madonna at the Moat," by Albrecht Durer, and "Entombment," by H.A.P. Grieshaber. The exhibit is open free during library hours, 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Fridays, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays and 4 p.m.-9 p.m. Sundays. Visitors must check in with the circulation desk.

The display is sponsored by the university and the Society of Mary religious order, as well as Dayton University's International Marian Research Institute, which Roten directs.

Free Hindu meditation talks begin tomorrow

A free series of talks about Hindu meditation will begin tomorrow featuring Swami Bhaskarananda, the spiritual leader of the Vedanta Society of Western Washington.

"Techniques of Controlling the Mind" will be presented at 11:30 a.m. at the YWCA, 1040 Richards St., Room 105.

The series will continue at 11:30 a.m. May 11 and 18. "How to Overcome Fear" will be the swami's topic at 11:30 a.m. May 25.

A senior monk of the Ramakrishna Order in India, Bhaskarananda has taught for many years at the Seattle society's center.

He will speak about "The Hindu Concept of God" at the 7:30 a.m. Wednesday meeting of Open Table, an ecumenical group. The meeting at 15 Craigside Place is open to the public.

Prayers to be offered for Kauai residents in Iraq

An Interfaith Breakfast for Peace, Unity and Understanding is scheduled for next Saturday to offer prayers for more than 50 people with Garden Island ties now serving in Iraq.

A buffet breakfast at Aloha Beach Resort will begin at 8 a.m. The cost is $13 per person.

The sponsors are the East Kauai Y Men's Service Club and the Kauai County League of Women Voters.

Donations are welcome to help underwrite the event.
