Poetry slam returns
after a winning debut

AFTER A successful debut last month, "First Thursdays" returns to Studio 1 on North King Street tonight.

More than 300 people were on hand when Chinua Thelwell walked away with the $100 first prize as Sister in Sound wax master DJ Zita threw down in the background. This time around, keep in mind that admission is only $3 before things start at 8 p.m. Once competition starts, the price goes up to $5. Call 387-9664 for more info.

According to organizer Steve Kealoha Wong, this month's competition is nationally certified and will be held with the support of Poetry Slam Incorporated. That means each month's winner will have a shot at joining an official Hawaii slam team that will tour and compete on a national level. Let's hope that also means the prize money will go up a bit as well ...
