Variety doing special
section on isle filming


Variety, the entertainment industry's news bible, has taken notice of Hawaii's busy production schedule since last year and will publish a multipage special section about the state's exploding film and television industry. Barry Rivers, Maui Film Festival director, will be spotlighted for the growing prominence with Hollywood heavyweights of his annual June event.

Filmed in Hawaii just over the last 12 months have been "The Break" TV series pilot by "Blue Crush" writer/director John Stockwell; an as-yet-titled film project by writer/director John Hamburg starring Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston; "North Shore," a reality-based television series about surfers for The WB network; "The Big Bounce," directed by George Armitage and starring Morgan Freeman and Owen Wilson; "Helldorado," starring The Rock and Christopher Walken; plus other completed and already-seen film and TV projects as "Tears of the Sun," "Baywatch Hawaiian Wedding," "My Wife & Kids," "Blue Crush" and the opening sequence of the James Bond film "Die Another Day."

All of this has amounted to more then $130 million in production revenues for the state. ...

"ER" is here filming scenes for two episodes through this month, directed by Chris Chulack and starring cast members Noah Wyle and Goran Visnjic. The Hawaii locations are doubling for the Congo. Production offices are based at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. ...

If you're wondering about those "Kisses" signs along Kamehameha Highway near Kualoa Ranch, they're for the filming of the Adam Sandler-Drew Barrymore motion picture "50 First Kisses," which is shooting at the nearby fish pond. The romantic comedy, which films here through May, will be released Feb. 13, 2004, a day before Valentine's Day. ...

Syndicated Productions will film an as-yet-untitled reality show this month on Oahu and will hire a video cameraman, assistant cameraman, ENG sound mixers and production assistants.
