Kim puts Hawaii
golfers within sight
of WAC lead


HOUSTON, Texas >> Justin Kim shot a 2-under par 70 at the Houstonian Golf Club yesterday, putting the Hawaii men's golf team in second place after the first day of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Warriors shot a 290 as a team, just one stroke behind Tulsa.

Kim is two strokes behind leader David Inglis of Tulsa, who shot a 68, but two other Warriors are also in the hunt for medalist honors. James Beston shot a 33 on the front nine to end up with a 71 and Matt Kodama is five strokes away from Inglis at 72.

Kellen Floyd Asao shot a 77 and Jaime Matsumura carded an 80 to round out the scoring for the Warriors.

The second round resumes today with the 54-hole tournament wrapping up tomorrow.

Rainbow Wahine win sailing championship

The Hawaii women's sailing team qualified for the national championship regatta with a first place effort in the PCIYRA women's championships last weekend.

The national championship will be held Saturday at Long Beach, Calif., the sixth straight year the Wahine have qualified for the event.

Coogan named WAC Pitcher of the Week

Hawaii pitcher Melissa Coogan won her third WAC Pitcher of the Week award of the season, beating out Leslie Poole of Fresno State.

Coogan beat San Jose State three times last week, shutting the Spartans out twice and not allowing an earned run in 21 innings.
