Dining out with Dave
means elegant grinds

IN CASE you missed the full-page ad in Sunday's Star-Bulletin -- and how could you? -- it stated simply, "Finally, the Bistro at Century Center." It was with some anticipation that we checked and learned "finally" means tonight when proprietor Ben Wong opens the door for some elegant business. Now you can return to dining on such things as Venison Chateaubriand, Bistro Coq Au Vin, Duck L'Orange etc. And Tim Kallen should be at the keyboard of a special 300th anniversary $80,000 Steinway Piano. The wait staff are veterans of many of Hawaii's finest eateries of old, places like the Third Floor and the original Bistro on Kapiolani, formerly my favorite Isle eatery. I had the opportunity to sample Cliff Laughton's new Bistro and if the French Onion Soup doesn't remind you of the old Bistro's, you weren't there ...

THE Canadian Broadcasting Corp. was so surprised to find Willis Moore of the Hawaii Geographic Society at O'Hare Airport in Chicago about to board a plane to Toronto, that they interviewed him about why he was going. Moore explained he was addressing the prestigious Granite Club there and left the reporter speechless when he said, "There were 43,000 people killed in the USA last year in car crashes. There is a greater likelihood of getting hit by a car in Toronto than there is of contracting SARS." ...

Hu's there

ISLE beauty queen Kelly Hu, who's gone on to establish herself as an actress, will be a guest tonight on the Craig Kilborn show. For those who don't stay up late, Kilborn is the funny fellow whose show follows David Letterman on CBS ... For those anticipating a "Seduction" scene at Indigo Saturday, it was "Not tonight. I have a throat condition." Zenia Zambriano, who with Katie Doyle was to be featured in the cabaret "Seduction," previously at the Arts at Mark's Garage, had lost her voice, so you'll have to wait until this Saturday to catch them ...

THE Consul of Japan, Hiroko Taniguchi, writes, "I read your Thursday, April 24th column with much interest as the headline read, 'Oh no! An Ono Show for Pono and Akebono.'" It's not that Consul Taniguchi is a punster, but his office here coordinates the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program of which Pono Paahao is a current participant ... And UH's Paul Costello reacts to the suggestion here that the two awful logos prepared at an initial fee of $82,000 be named Costello and Abbott. His suggestion, "I prefer Elvis to Abbott." ...

Barbecute

ONE of the items at Leeward Community College's "Taste of the Stars" Saturday night is an "island-style backyard barbecue" for four hosted by TV personality Emme Tomimbang and celebrity chef Roy Yamaguchi. The only way to bid on the item is to be at Saturday's event, co-chaired by Emme and Roy (not to be confused with Seigfried and Roy) and featuring the work of 19 of Hawaii's finest chefs. As for the barbecue, we're told that Roy will cook and Emme will do the dishes. That seems fair ...
