Still no 10th
sport for PacWest


The Pacific West Conference Athletic Directors wrapped up their meeting in Laie yesterday without adding the 10th sport they will need to comply with NCAA regulations.

The conference will need to add another sport by the fall of next year, and decided that it gave them enough time to table discussion while PacWest commissioner Woody Hahn explores other options. The PacWest is the smallest conference in the nation, with only six schools.

The group will meet again Oct. 4 in Honolulu.

Hawaii women win at WAC tennis tourney

BOISE, Idaho >> The Hawaii women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the Western Athletic Conference Championship yesterday, beating San Jose State 4-0.

UH plays No. 1 seed Fresno State on Monday.

Stacy Hakikawa, Renata Camargo and Kimberley Curtis all won singles matches for UH. The Rainbow Wahine also won two of three doubles matches.

On the men's side, UH (14-13) lost to Fresno State 4-0.

Wahine split in water polo

STANFORD, Calif. >> The Hawaii water polo team split a pair of matches at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament yesterday, beating Pacific 8-3 and losing to UCLA 12-3.

Beth Novick scored four goals for UH in the first game.

Hawaii plays San Diego State today.

Hilo loses twice in softball

BILLINGS, Mont. >> Hawaii-Hilo stranded 24 baserunners in dropping a softball doubleheader to Montana State-Billings yesterday.

MSBU (14-15, 5-9 PWC) beat Hilo (26-17, 11-7) 6-1 and 4-3.

Nancy Vega hit a two-run homer to give Hilo a brief 3-2 lead in the second game.
