Barbara Ching, top, worked on a window box, "Anna's Vision Bursts with a Celebration of Colors." To create their pieces for the "Anna's Vision" horticulture competition, members tried to envision the view that academy founder and benefactor Anna Rice Cook saw from her window.

Bye George,
we’ve got it

Spring's in full swing, especially at the Honolulu Academy of Arts where members of the Garden Club of Honolulu were furiously at work the past few days readying its "Academy in Bloom" exhibit, which opens today and runs through Sunday.

Consider it their one big lei of aloha to George Ellis, the academy's president and director who retired earlier this year, said club spokesperson Paulette Stone. It's also a way the garden club, a branch of the Garden Club of America, can give back to the community by providing a creative display for all to enjoy.

In addition to floral and horticultural tableaus, the exhibit, free to kamaaina, includes jewelry made of plant material, interpretations of art using florals, an educational exhibit of Hawaiian medicinal plants, hats made of flowers for a set titled "Hat's off to George," and more.
