Wahine bring in
versatile guard

Janevia Taylor has signed a national letter of intent and will join the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine basketball team this fall.

A 5-foot-5 guard from San Bernardino High School in Riverside, Calif., Taylor averaged 19.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.6 steals per game in helping her team to a 19-9 record.

She averaged 28 points and nine rebounds in three California Interscholastic Federation tournament games. San Bernardino finished the season ranked No. 21 in the CIF Southern Section.

"Janevia is very athletic, can change pace quickly and stop on a dime," said Wahine assistant coach Da Houl. "She has the ability to bring the ball up court under pressure and still be able to find open teammates. She shoots with her left hand and can play either point guard or shooting guard."

Taylor was the Most Valuable Player of the San Andreas League in 2001 and 2002, a first-team all-league selection three times and a two-time CIF first-team pick.

"She does a lot of things for us, but foremost is that she is a leader by her actions and words," said San Bernardino coach Paul Akahoshi.

"Janevia is very talented in getting the job done in whatever way is necessary. We played her primarily at point guard because she is such a good penetrater. She gets to the key and either gets her own shot off or finds a teammate. She can hit the 3-pointer and has excellent court vision."

Taylor, team captain her junior and senior seasons, also was recruited by Vanderbilt, Utah State, Hofstra and New Mexico State.

Hawaii also signed four players during the early signing period in November.

State Farm Classic all set for August

Pairings for the 2003 NACWAA State Farm Women's Volleyball Classic were announced yesterday. Hawaii hosts the tournament scheduled for Aug. 22-23.

In a rematch of last year's NCAA semifinal, defending national champion Southern California takes on Florida at 5 p.m. on Friday. The Rainbow Wahine will play Kansas State in the second match at 7 p.m. The consolation match will be at 5 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the championship match at 7 p.m.

Five first-team All-Americans will be participating in the tournament. Senior April Ross and junior Emily Adams lead USC. Florida returns Aury Cruz and Hawaii brings back Lily Kahumoku and Kim Willoughby.
