A little ‘bite’ of Hawaii
in Santa Monica

TRUE Colors: Casting director Garrison True says Hawaii's film commissioners -- all female, by the way -- did themselves proud at the Association of Film Commissioners International Locations Trade Show in Santa Monica. He felt like he was back in Hawaii visiting their booth, with an aloha shirt design. "If there's an award for best booth," True exclaims, "they will win." ... While there, True also stopped by the new cafe with indoor and outdoor dining, "Basic Bites," owned by Hawaii's own Kelly Hu. She's gone on to a successful acting career since winning the Miss Teen USA contest in 1985 and becoming the first Asian-American to ever win the national title ...

THE sun doesn't always shine in the Seattle/Tacoma, Wash., area, but it seemed to when the Aloha Festivals Royal Court rode in Tacoma's Daffodil Festival Grand Floral Street Parade last Saturday. Aloha Festivals' president Valerie O'Brien led the group. Two listeners to KBSG in Tacoma will win a trip for two to Hawaii on Friday ... Strawberry lovers will be gathering tonight in Bronson's Executive Center in Waimea where fresh Waimea Strawberries will be magically turned into margaritas and strawberry cheesecake. It's all part of a fund-raiser for freshman State Rep. Cindy Evans, with a strawberry twist. If you're watching your figure, Waimea's Patti Cook, deadpans, there'll also be strawberries drenched in sour cream and brown sugar ...

Church Lady

The Welsh soprano came to Hawaii to do a series of private concerts, but chose to stay at the Fairmont Orchid instead of the place where she performed. The singing sensation, whose four albums have sold over 10 million copies, had stayed at the Orchid before, and, in her words, she "just loves it." She also did some sunbathing at the beach, sailing on an outrigger and getting massages at the Spa Without Walls. The Church lady sums it up: "It was heavenly." Just like her voice ...

IT was a kind of busman's holiday for Auntie Pasto owner Ed Wary when he and wife Tiny got a baby sitter and had a night on the town at another Italian eatery, Sergio's in the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Wary, who is Hawaii's delegate to the National Restaurant Association, can now speak about Italian restaurants without limiting it to his own. The folks at Sergio's got the idea that while it was Wary's first visit there, it won't be his last ...

Birthday of the Bard

THE birthday of William Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon, will be celebrated for the 33rd straight year on Sunday with UH's Terence Knapp in charge of the festivities to which the public is welcomed at 6 p.m. The UH's Elizabeth Wichmann-Walczak will join Knapp by performing as Lady Macbeth. Knapp isn't ashamed to admit that his love of Shakespeare dates from when he was 13 and played Lady Macbeth in a grammar school production ...
