George Lum of Palolo Chinese Home and Alice Morisako of the Moanalua Senior Citizens Club are the city's 2003 Outstanding Male and Female Volunteers.

They were honored at the 37th annual Mayor's Senior Recognition Program event, "Honoring Na Kupuna: Hands and Hearts of Our Community," at the Hilton Hawaii Village Resort. The Honolulu Committee on Aging and the city Elderly Affairs Division produced the program.

Also recognized were six honorable-mention Akamai Living Award winners: Lorraine Caceres, Manuel Silva, Pat Paakaula, Pat Roth, Doris Rewick and Beatrice Terumoto.

Lum, 80, is president of the Palolo home and has been on the board for 11 years. He is leading the rebuilding of its campus and health-care programs.

Since the mid-1990s, Lum has been a teacher and presenter for Sageplus, a state program that counsels about Medicaid and Medicare benefits. He has also served thousands of hours on the council of the Community Church of Honolulu.

Palolo Chinese Home nominated Lum for recognition because "he is an example of the foundation stones our society is built upon: reliable, consistent, trustworthy, progressive in thinking and practical in application."

Morisako, 72, volunteers for the Moanalua Senior Citizens Club, which praised her "remarkable ability to get other people involved and her excellence as a role model," in nominating her for the award.

She also gives her time to the Moanalua Gardens Foundation, Moanalua Schools, Kaiser Medical Center, Hawaii United Okinawan Association and the Ginowan Shijin Kai ancestral club. Her many roles include student hostess, kitchen helper, secretary, andagi cook, fund-raiser, docent coordinator, chairwoman and lei maker.

The Hawaii Medical Service Association and the Hilton Hawaiian Village are principal sponsors of the program.
