In The Mix

Jason Genegabus

Naughty duo
heads Hilo fest

SO MUCH for my New Year's resolution this year of promising to live my life differently -- I never did get that gym membership, work is keeping me way too busy (as usual) and I'll be one of those people racing to mail my taxes out around midnight tonight.

Now I'd love to take a few days and get away, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen since I'll be sending what little extra money I do have to Uncle Sam. But if you're one of those lucky people getting a refund, why not spend it on a trip to the Big Island or Maui this week?

HIP-HOP VETERANS Naughty by Nature return to the islands after a visit in December for the "Pipeline Masters Kickoff Party" at Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park. Treach and Vinny will be on the Big Isle Thursday night this time, headlining the "2003 Urban Musicfest" at Hilo's Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Local acts scheduled to perform at the Musicfest include Sudden Rush, Times 5 and the Roots Players. Tickets are $30 and are available at CD Wizard, Byrd's Audio and Melekai Music. Doors open at 6 p.m. ...

ON SATURDAY, Maui is the island of choice when the "Maui No Ka Oi Ohana Bash" gets under way at Kahului's War Memorial Complex. Bruddah Sam and Lina Girl from Local Kine Grindz will join Overdrive Live's Davey D in hosting the concert, which starts at noon and goes until 10 p.m.

If you've been to a concert featuring island music at the Waikiki Shell, then you know what to expect Saturday on Maui. Making the trip from Oahu to perform are Ale'a, Aziel, B.E.T., Keahiwai, Koa'uka, Native Blend, the Next Generation, Pati and Three Plus. Tickets are $20 for adults, $12 for students with valid ID and free for keiki under 5. Pick yours up at Borders Maui Marketplace, Hapa Haole Video, Maui Music and 808 Wireless ...

AND SPEAKING OF taking a trip: Best wishes to the guys from Nomasterbacks, three Kamehameha grads representing the 808 state who leave this week on their "Flight of the Mejiro 2003" tour of the Pacific Northwest.

Fellow hip-hop head Kavet the Catalyst will also be making the trip with Defiance, Temper T and well.being to California, Oregon, Washington and Canada in support of NMB's album, "Lukewarm:Response." This marks the second time Nomasterbacks will tour the region; have a safe trip, guys ...
