Spill into Lake Wilson blamed on storms

Thursday's thunderstorms are being blamed for the spill of about 14,000 gallons of partially treated effluent into Lake Wilson, the city said in a press release yesterday.

The storm caused a flicker in electrical power and took an ultra-violet disinfection system off line from 5:51 p.m. to 6:01 p.m.

The UV units re-set themselves and resumed normal functions once power was restored, according to the press release. The spilled waste water had undergone tertiary treatment, but not the final stage of ultraviolet disinfection.

Warning signs are being posted and the state Department of Health has been notified. The state and city workers involved in salvinia removal were also notified.

Soldier's funeral set for Mililani Mortuary

Funeral services for Sgt. Eugene Williams, who was killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq, will be held on Good Friday, April 18, at Mililani Mortuary.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m., according to an Army spokeswoman.

Burial will be the following day at 10 a.m. at Mililani cemetery.

Williams, 24, and three other members of 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized), from Fort Stewart, Ga., were killed March 29 when a suicide bomber, posing as a taxicab driver, pulled up to a roadblock north of Najaf and waved to the troops for help.

He served with the 25th Infantry Division from April 1998 to December 2001 as a member of 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment (Gimlets), at Schofield Barracks.

He is married to Brandy Dela Cruz Williams, a 1995 Sacred Hearts Academy graduate, of Waipio.

The couple have one daughter, Mya, and Brandy Williams is expecting a second daughter in June.
