Isle churches continue
tradition of celebrating
Easter at sunrise


Easter sunrise services have become a tradition in warm climates as a way of dramatizing the Gospel stories of Christ's disciples visiting his tomb early in the morning and learning he had risen from the dead.

Some outdoor Easter sunrise services planned:

>> Punchbowl: The 6:15 a.m. service at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific will feature Navy Cmdr. Jeffrey E. Rhodes, deputy chaplain for Marine Forces Pacific, the Royal Hawaiian Band and Trinity Samoan United Church of Christ Choir. It is the 102nd year for the event, which is sponsored by the United Church of Christ, the United Methodist Church and Nuuanu valley churches. Gates open at 4:30 a.m. TheBus will run two special shuttles departing at 5:15 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. from the Monsarrat Avenue terminus with stops along Kuhio and Kalakaua Avenue and at 5:30 a.m. and 5:45 a.m. at the Alapai Terminal.

>> Hawaii Kai: 6 a.m. Maunalua Bay Beach Park. Five community churches will sponsor a joint service.

>> Ala Moana: 6:30 a.m., Magic Island, Ala Moana Park, presented by Calvary Chapel Honolulu.

>> Kailua: 6 a.m., Kailua Beach Park pavilions near the boat ramp, sponsored by Windward Coalition of Churches.

>> Kalihi-Kai: 7:30 a.m., Sand Island State Park, by the Salvation Army Waianae Outpost.

>> Liliha: 6:30 a.m. Salvation Army Kauluwela Mission Corps, 296 Vineyard Blvd. Breakfast will follow.

>> Wahiawa: 6 a.m., Leilehua High School stadium, with several Wahiawa congregations joining. Bring seat cushions.
