Holy Week for
Christians begins

Star-Bulletin staff

Easter, the great holiday of Christianity, is a week away but the festival begins tomorrow with Palm Sunday. Many churches stage processions of palm-waving participants, re-enacting the Gospel description of people greeting Jesus as he entered Jerusalem.

No one does it in a bigger way than the Kalihi Palama Interfaith Council, with a procession by several congregations from Chinatown to Kaumakapili Church. The parade starts at 8 a.m. tomorrow at Smith and Beretania streets. It proceeds on Aala Street, Vineyard Boulevard, Liliha Street and King Street to the church at 766 N. King St. for an 8:45 a.m. service.

Some churches borrow from the Jewish Passover by staging versions of a Seder meal. Tradition is that Christ's last supper with his disciples was a Passover meal. Seder suppers are planned for tomorrow evening at St. Mark's Episcopal Church and Nuuanu Congregational Church.

Jesus' last supper with his apostles is celebrated on Holy Thursday. It is also called Maundy Thursday from the Latin word "mandatum" or commandment, for the new commandment he gave to "love one another as I have loved you."

"What's so Good about Good Friday," the title of a children's program at St. Andrew's Cathedral, underscores the unlikely title for the day Christ died. One answer is that good meant holy in the Old English language.

The three-hour program for children tells about Christ's death and resurrection in a way that makes sense to children. It will begin at 9 a.m. Friday in the Von Holt Room. Register with Jenny Wallace, 524-2822 or jennywallace@hawaii.rr.com.

Children will dramatize the story of Christ's death at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Church. The Stations of the Cross in mime will be performed by St. Patrick School 8th-graders, continuing a nine-year tradition.

Brahms' "German Requiem" will be performed at 11 a.m. Friday at Kawaiahao Church by a massed choir including Hawaii Ecumenical Chorale and Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus members accompanied by the Kawaiahao String Ensemble.

Also on Good Friday, the Windward Coalition of Churches will sponsor a joint noon service at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 93 N. Kainalu Drive.
