Pearl City did a lot of running, but not a lot of gunning, and escaped with a 46-44 home victory over Campbell last night in a battle of Oahu Interscholastic Association basketball unbeatens.

The Chargers (5-0) built a comfortable 17-9 lead in the second quarter, thanks to an effective fast break. But they couldn't pull away from the gritty Sabers (4-1), who forced the issue in the paint and went nine of 16 from the line in the second quarter and trimmed the Chargers' lead to 29-26 at the half.

"Too close," Pearl City coach Mike Morton said. "It was a very sloppy game, full of fouls and turnovers. We knew the Campbell zone was going to give us problems and it did. We knew they've got some good guards who like to drive, and we couldn't stop them. We'll be working on our defense and breaking it down at practice."

Both teams have key upcoming games. Pearl City heads to Aiea on Friday and meets Radford next Tuesday. Na Alii and the Rams were undefeated heading into last night's games. Campbell visits Radford on Friday.

Only 14 total points were scored in the third quarter, but the lead changed hands three times. Chaunte Jackson's inside basket gave the Sabers a 35-34 edge heading into the final eight minutes.

Marci Lobendahn's rebound basket and two free throws put the Chargers up by three 45-42 with less than a minute to go. Jalen Garcia hit two from the line for Campbell before Jillan Soria sunk one for the Chargers to make it 46-44 with 22 seconds to go.

Jackson missed two from the line with 17 ticks left and her last-gasp shot as time expired went off the rim.

"We threw the ball in where we weren't supposed to," Campbell coach Nathan Macadangdang said about the Sabers' final play. "If we were making our shots and minimizing our turnovers, it wouldn't have come down to the end like that. But the girls played hard. If we did a few things different here and there, it could have been a different result."

Jamie Kua, who was immense off the boards for the Sabers, agreed. She finished with a team-high 11 points, but she had an off-night shooting.

"I missed a lot of shots, and that's not good," she said. "We could have set our screens better and we could have been more aggressive."

But Kua and the Chargers weren't the only ones having shooting problems.

"We weren't hitting our outside shots," said Pearl City's Christie Ayers, who finished with a game-high 17 points. "We had some mental breakdowns and didn't come out ready to play in the second half. It was frustrating that the game got close at the end, especially since we had a big lead earlier."

Ayers spearheaded a 9-1 first-quarter run with six points on two fast-break layups and a smooth baseline 18-footer as the Chargers took a 13-9 lead after one quarter.

Ayers continued her hot scoring pace in the second quarter, finishing another fast break and converting on a baseline drive to go along with four free throws as Pearl City gained its 29-26 halftime lead.

Spunky Campbell guard Jalen Garcia spearheaded the Sabers' second-quarter comeback with five points, including a layup on a feed from Jaqueline Mendes.

Despite the too-close-for-comfort victory, Morton was pleased with Pearl City's toughness with the game on the line.

"They kept fighting and didn't give up," he said.
