Sixth-graders need to update vaccinations

Hawaii's sixth-graders should update their shot records before summer vacation to ensure they meet immunization requirements to start seventh grade.

Some schools are offering prizes from merchants to encourage children to complete their immunizations before the last day of school.

The law requires students to have the following vaccinations before entering seventh grade:

>> 3 Hepatitis B
>> 2 MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella)
>> 1 or 2 Varicella (chickenpox)

Students must prove that they have been immunized or are in the process of completing requirements before they can attend school.

Parents of children who do not have a doctor should call 211.

For more information on immunization requirements, visit www.vaxtoschool.com or call the Hawaii Immunization Branch at 586-8323. Neighbor islanders may call toll-free 1-800-933-4832.

Tourist dies after bicycle is struck by car

Big Island police have opened a negligent homicide investigation into the death of a Colorado tourist whose bicycle was struck by a car near Kappa Park in North Kohala Friday afternoon.

The victim was identified as Debra Kelly, 50, of Pagosa, Colo. She and her husband were heading north on separate bicycles on the shoulder of the road when a 1998 Plymouth sedan veered onto the shoulder and struck Kelly's bicycle shortly before 4:30 p.m., police said.

The driver of the car was identified as Larissa Gomes, 23, of Waikoloa. She and her 5-year-old son, who was a passenger, were not injured, police said.

Kelly was taken to North Kohala Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 5:14 p.m.

An autopsy was to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

This is the fifth traffic fatality so far this year on the Big Island, compared to 11 at the same time last year.
