» In the 24th annual Pele Awards Saturday, Laird Christianson Harris Advertising was awarded the Best of Show in Advertising for its KFC commercial titled "Experiment." The video it prepared for the opening of the 23rd annual Pele Awards received a special judges' award; a story on Page E3 Sunday said incorrectly that it received a Best of Show award.

The Hawaii Advertising Federation's 24th annual Pele Awards and other industry honors were announced at Hilton Hawaiian Village last night.

Design work created for Wailea Beach Villas earned Milici Valenti Ng Pack a best of show.


Of the 824 entries in locally created broadcast, print and online advertising and graphic design, 46 Pele Awards were presented. Two agencies led with five awards each.

Milici Valenti Ng Pack won five awards, including a best of show for design work created for Wailea Beach Villas. The project also won in the Brochures, Direct Mail and Travel & Tourism Collateral categories. Its other Peles were for the Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau, in the Trade Publication Print Advertising category and Prudential Locations in the Newspaper category.

ADWorks' five Pele awards were in the Retail Advertising Print category for Z-Interiors, in Newspaper Advertising for University of Hawaii, for two works on its own behalf in the Web Site Design and Agency Self-Promotion categories, and a special Creative Award for Copywriting was presented to Brett Wagner for Castle & Cooke Homes Hawaii.

Another best of show award was presented to Laird Christianson Harris Advertising in the Promotion Video for a production created for the 23rd annual Pele Awards. The firm also won Peles in the Broadcast Public Service, Radio Advertising and Television Advertising under $10,000 categories.

Pele awardees' work progresses next to the American Advertising Federation in Washington, D.C., for competition against other district winners.

The Hawaii Advertising Federation also presents other awards at its annual gala:

>> Louise Saffery, president of inter-media , was named Advertising Woman of the Year and Bradley Shin, creative director of Hendrix Miyasaki Shin Advertising was named Advertising Man of the Year.

>> The Ad 2 Honolulu Outstanding Young Advertising Person of the Year is Sean Morris, president of Sean Morris & Associates, a division of Advertising Associates International. Ad 2 Honolulu is an association for advertising professionals age 32 and under.

>> The American Advertising Federation Silver Medal, presented for furthering excellence in advertising, was presented to Dennis Burns, president of Pacific Focus.

Additional awards were also presented at the annual event by other industry organizations:

>> The American Institute of Graphic Arts' Designer's Choice Award went to Stacey Leong Mills and William K. Mills for volunteer work on behalf of the AIGA Honolulu Chapter; Stacey serves as its president.

>> The Advertising Agency Association of Hawaii Lifetime Achievement Award was presented in the name of the late George Chaplin, the former Honolulu Advertiser editor who died in February.

>> George Arthur Pellegrin Minority Scholarship Awards of $1,000 each were awarded to Brenda Scoria, Honolulu Community College; Lacy Solis, Honolulu Community College and Ryan Seaway of Hawaii Pacific University. The scholarship is given to minority students planning careers in advertising.
