Menehunes’ late run
too much for Govs

The fourth quarter was golden for Moanalua and dreadful for Farrington last night.

Christina Sierra's 3-pointer and Patti Hardimon's steal and length-of-the-court drive keyed a 12-2 run to start the final period as the Menehunes pulled away from the host Governors for a 43-37 Oahu Interscholastic Association basketball victory.

Marleen Leautu also provided a fourth quarter spark by dominating the boards and taking control of the inside on defense.

"The girls attacked more and were more aggressive (in the second half)," Moanalua coach Roy Dias said. "We were fortunate that Farrington didn't shoot as well as they could have."

The Menehunes (3-0) led just 27-25 after three quarters before the decisive run put them ahead 39-27.

But despite numerous turnovers, the Governors (2-2) didn't go down easy and went on a 10-4 run to close the game while Moanalua struggled at the free-throw line.

"We've been working on it," Dias said. "I guess we've got to work on it more."

The game was nip and tuck for three periods, and the biggest lead of the first half was three points. The Govs, led by Meleane Mateaki's four first-quarter points and superb rebounding, led 11-10 after one quarter.

Hardimon notched six of her 11 points in that opening period for the Menehunes.

Kepua Lee got into a groove for Moanalua in the second quarter and scored five of her game-high 14 points. She was also instrumental late in the game with some big assists and steals.

Lee's 18-footer capped a 9-4 run to put the Menehunes ahead 19-17 at halftime.

Each team scored eight points in the hard-fought third quarter, leading to Moanalua's strong early fourth-quarter spree.

"We wanted to run them, push the ball up, keep the ball on our side, near our basket and control the game," Lee said. "They (the Governors) were aggressive and put up a good fight. Marleen (Leautu) was a big factor on the boards for us. She's strong and she's got the height."

Laosamoa Misa-Uli scored six of her team-high 13 points in the fourth quarter as Farrington kept it close.

"Our turnovers, that was the key right there," Governors coach Jenic Tumaneng said. "And we needed to step it up and rebound. We were giving them second and third opportunities. We've got to take care of the ball better, especially since we have players who can put it in the bucket."

Guard Revelyn Cabaya scored six of her 12 points in the final period for the Govs.

"We made too many turnovers," said Mateaki, who was less and less of a factor in the middle as the game went on. "We made some lazy passes and we could have tried for more open shots."

Hardimon and Leautu finished with 11 points apiece for Moanalua.

"Marleen played some big minutes for us," Dias said. "And Kepua (Lee) is playing really well. She's only a junior and she's grown a lot as a player."
